Ford Granada 2.3 Consort Mk.2 | Sold through British Car Auctions, Tewkesbury. This Granada always had a propensity to eat driveshafts which I suspect was a legacy of the previous owner having used it to pull a heavy caravan. The CV joints were just starting to become noisy again and I really didnt want to spend any more money fixing them... | Having sold my previous car UJX316X on a Friday evening I then had to find a replacement to get me to work on Monday morning. Spied this Granada in the Autotrader on Saturday afternoon and then viewed purchased it on the Sunday morning.
Consort was a limited edition based upon the Granada L, with sunroof, duotone paint and a handful of other extras borrowed from the top of the range Ghia model.
This car had originally belonged to Visionhire TV rentals, being sold to one of their employees once it had served its time on the company fleet. I became the third owner.
The purpose of selling my previous Cavalier had been to raise cash to buy furniture for our new house as we were getting married later that year. I had been expecting to trade down to a cheap old banger, but in the event managed to sell the Cavalier for GBP2500 and then bought this Granada for GBP1350 and so, on the face of it, went from an Xreg Cavalier to an Xreg Granada and was still able to put GBP1150 back in the bank. It seemed a very good deal at the time
I really loved this old Granada and of all the cars I have ever owned andor driven this is still my ultimate favourite
Its one shortcoming was a noticeable lack of oomph but in those days I knew the proprietor of a local taxi firm who used to run white exPolice Granadas on his hackney carriage fleet after first removing the 2.8 V6 engines and replacing them with more economical 2.0 units. This meant he often had the odd, surplus 2.8 Granada engine for sale. It was whilst waiting for one of these larger units to become available that I was offered A777UVV by a mate in the Trade which at a stroke solved all of my horsepower deficiency problems
